What to Expect During the Hiring Process:
After the Police Officer application forms are submitted to the Dover Police Department, they will be placed in the active file for up to one year or until there is an opening, whichever comes first. Failure to successfully complete any part of the process or arriving late for an appointment will result in the applicant being removed from consideration. Applicants who are removed from consideration will be notified in writing by mail. The hiring process usually takes from 4 to 6 months to complete and will proceed as follows:
| Physical Ability and Written
Examination: Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will receive a notice by mail of the time, date, and location to report for the Physical Ability and Written Examination. Both tests will be held on the same day. The physical ability test consists of a 300 meter run, push-ups, sit-ups, and a 1 1/2 mile run. The Written Examination tests vocabulary, reading skills, an general knowledge. Applicants must pass the Physical Ability test in order to proceed to the Written Examination. | Personal History Statement Upon successful completion of the Physical and Written tests, applicants will be provided with a "Personal History" package which must be completed and returned to the Dover Police Department by the date indicated on the cover letter. | |
| Oral Board Interview Approximately 2 to 3 weeks after the Personal History package due date, those applicants not disqualified for unfavorable personal history information will be notified by telephone of the date and time to report to the Dover Police Department for an Oral Board interview. Applicants should dress appropriately. | |
| Background Investigation Within 1 to 2 weeks, applicants receiving a passing score on the Oral Board interview will be notified in writing that they are proceeding to the Background investigation phase. An extensive investigation of each applicant's background will be conducted by a Dover Police Department officer and includes a background interview. The investigation normally takes about 6 weeks. | |
| Chief's Interview Those applicants recommended for hire upon completion of the background interview will be notified by telephone of the date and time to report for an interview with the Chief of Police. The Chief of Police makes the final selection of those applicants recommended to be hired. | |
| Psychological and Physical
Examination Within the next two weeks, selected applicants will be notified by telephone of the dates, times, and locations to report for a psychological and physical examination. Applicants who successfully pass both exams will be placed on an eligibility list and selected for hiring in the order of the final ranking made by the Chief of Police. The number of persons hired will depend on available positions. Final eligibility results will be made known to all persons on the list by telephone. Those not hired will be kept on an alternate list for up to one year. |
