The Crisis Negotiation Team, or C.N.T., is utilized to calmly talk persons out of a variety of dangerous, or potentially dangerous, situations. These include hostage situations, barricaded persons, and suicidal persons.

The purpose of the team is to talk such persons into alleviating a situation gone awry with no further injury than has already occurred, if any. The C.N.T. is convened for a variety of situations in an attempt to end a situation peacefully, rather than tactically through the use of S.O.R.T.

Members of the HNT, supervised by an officer holding the rank of Sergeant, are trained in Hostage Negotiation and Crisis Intervention. Team members train regularly, often in conjunction with S.O.R.T., and attend continuing education and in-service seminars. Recently, a new program was initiated for Critical Incident Stress Debriefing.
