Internal Affairs

The Internal Affairs Unit was formed with the mission of assuring the integrity of the Police Department by maintaining an internal system that is objective, fair, and equitable in its methods of internal investigation. The Internal Affairs Unit investigates all complaints or allegations of corruption, use of excessive force, breach of civil rights, criminal misconduct, and violations of department policy.

The Internal Affairs Unit is unique in that it stands outside of the normal chain of command within the organization of the department. Officers assigned to this unit report directly to the Chief of Police through the Deputy Chief. This abbreviated chain of command ensures that the investigators remain neutral and impartial. This neutrality serves the ultimate objective of determining facts and truth, benefiting both the department and our citizens.

If you wish to contact the Internal Affairs Unit or file a complaint, please see the Dover Police Department's Citizen Complaint Process.

You may contact the Office of Internal Affairs at (302)736-7124.
