The K-9 Section of the Patrol Unit is comprised of four officers and their K-9 partners. This allows for one K-9 officer to be assigned to each shift. These officers are assigned special patrol vehicles equipped with a K-9 platform and divider, as well as a K-9 Bail-Out System allowing the officer remote control operation of the rear passenger door. This enables the officer's K-9 to remain in the vehicle, but available in seconds if he is needed.

K-9 Bite Training

The K-9 section trains monthly in various situations that routinely occur in the performance of duty for these officers, such as traffic stops, building searches, suspect tracking, obedience, agility, and article searches. The officers also train with their partners for less common situations such as assaults on the officer and situations involving gunfire exchange.

The K-9 officers are often requested for demonstrations and programs; they are especially popular guests at local elementary schools. The section competes in Police Dog competitions across the region, and has won several awards.
