Senior Citizen Volunteers play a vital role in the operation of the Dover Police Department. The program was initiated with a volunteer in the Records Unit, the Criminal Investigation Unit, and the Chief's Secretary Office. These volunteers are clerical. They assist the completion and filing of paperwork that has become too demanding for the regular, full time employees.
This program, initiated by Chief J.
Richard Smith in October 1993, is coordinated through the Retired
Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) at the Modern Maturity Center in
Dover. RSVP assists the police department in locating volunteers,
and only asks that the department track the number of hours each
volunteer donates monthly.
This program has been so successful that a position was added at the front desk in the form of a greeter/receptionist. All persons who enter the police station during business hours are likely to be greeted by a senior citizen volunteer.
