This section also operates the "Citizens Police Academy," which was developed to expose citizens of Dover to a sampling of the entry-level training received by police officers. Each academy session consists of 36 hours of instruction over a 12-week period. It provides for interaction between officers and the citizen participants, and gives the citizens a greater understanding of police practices and opportunity to see their tax dollars at work. It also provides the citizen with an expanded knowledge of Constitutional Law, State Law, and police procedures. The program is very popular, and each session has been filled to capacity.
All officers and civilian staff are afforded an opportunity to attend career-related training seminars and schools to enhance and advance their professional careers. In addition, the Dover Police Department is continuously honored to assist other criminal justice agencies and organizations in obtaining the best possible Law Enforcement training to meet the needs of those agencies or organizations.
